India Post, Shiprocket, NimbusPost, Shipway, Delhivery, Blue Dart, DTDC, Xpressbees, ShiprocketX or DHL — what each really costs per 500 g slab, why cash on delivery and returns cost more than the label, and a separate answer for sellers shipping abroad.

Shipping is the other cost every online store pays on every order, and in India it comes with two hidden partners: cash on delivery and the return trip. The same 500 g parcel from Jaipur to a town in Maharashtra is ₹72 at the post office counter, ₹65 on a free Shiprocket plan and ₹54 on its paid one — before 18% GST, before the ₹48 COD fee that most Indian customers trigger, and before the one order in four that comes back. This is a plain comparison of what the main Indian options cost in October 2026 — India Post, the aggregators and the couriers behind them — written twice: once for sellers shipping within India, and once for sellers shipping abroad.
Published prices as of October 2026, per 500 g slab, prepaid, before 18% GST unless stated. Freight is always extra and always changes, so treat the right-hand columns as the shape of each offer rather than a quote:
| Option | Software cost | Carriers and rates | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| India Post | Free | New parcel tariff from 1 August 2026: India Post Parcel ₹28 local, ₹65 within the state, ₹72 to other states for 500 g (₹114 for 1 kg); Speed Post Parcel ₹90 to other states. Walk-in discounts of 5–10% above ₹2,000 a day; contract rates about half the counter price. Every PIN code in the country. | Light parcels anywhere; remote PIN codes |
| Shiprocket | Free → ₹799/mo | Lite free; Business ₹199, Advanced ₹499, Pro ₹799 a month, each refunded once you ship 100, 500 or 1,000 orders. Cheapest standard 500 g on Lite: ₹45 same city to ₹65 rest of India (₹97 to the North-East); ₹36 to ₹54 on Pro. COD ₹48–56 or 2.5%, whichever is higher; remittance eight working days after delivery; wallet from ₹500. | The first thousand orders a month, many couriers |
| NimbusPost, Shipway, iThink Logistics | Free (wallet) | The same model with different cards: NimbusPost from ₹25.50 per 500 g (₹19 on its top tier), Shipway from ₹19, iThink’s standard plan ₹38.50 (DTDC) to ₹51.50 (Blue Dart). The “from” prices are same-city on the lightest slab; zones, COD and returns are extra. | Rate-shopping between aggregators |
| Delhivery direct | Contract | India’s largest courier, which absorbed Ecom Express in 2025. Rates by volume, calculator only after sign-up; a direct account usually beats the aggregators from a few thousand shipments a month. Volumetric weight at ÷5000. | Volume on one dominant courier |
| Blue Dart, DTDC, Xpressbees | Contract | Blue Dart air for speed, with a 120% fuel surcharge since 1 October 2026 and a 9–12% general price rise each January; DTDC and Xpressbees surface for cost. Xpressbees surface, at ₹45–65 for 500 g, is the cheapest line on most aggregator cards. | Speed (Blue Dart) or surface volume |
| ShiprocketX, India Post EMS | Free / counter | ShiprocketX from ₹230 per 50 g, ten to fifteen working days to the US and UK. India Post EMS ₹1,970 for 500 g to the USA and ₹2,055 to the UK (₹2,270 and ₹2,235 for 1 kg), plus GST, with the export filing done at a Dak Ghar Niryat Kendra. | Light parcels abroad |
| DHL Express, FedEx | Contract / per parcel | Door to door in two to five days. Indicative list prices of ₹1,800–1,900 for 500 g to the US or UK plus 18% GST and a 15–25% fuel surcharge; far less through an aggregator or on a contract. Duties can be paid by you (DDP). | Urgent or high-value exports |
| Shopify, WooCommerce apps | Included | There is no Shopify Shipping in India. Stores install the Shiprocket, Delhivery, NimbusPost or Shipway app and pay that provider’s rates; WooCommerce works the same way through plugins. | Convenience inside the platform |
Indian courier prices are quoted before 18% GST and, almost always, before COD and return charges. India Post figures are the 1 August 2026 tariff; aggregator figures are the public rate cards and pricing pages on 16 October 2026; DHL and FedEx figures are third-party indications, not the carriers’ lists.
In India nobody is comparing against a counter price; the whole market quotes the same thing — a 500 g slab across five zones — and the gaps come from four places:
The rule of thumb: compare on your parcel — your usual weight, box size, zones and share of COD orders — not on the “from ₹19” headline, which is the lightest slab to the same city. A ₹1,200 COD order to Zone D on a free plan is ₹65 freight plus ₹48 COD plus GST, about ₹133 all in. If it is refused, it is ₹65 out and ₹65 back plus GST — about ₹153 — with nothing sold. The cheapest shipping decision most Indian stores can make is to raise the prepaid share.
Take a 500 g parcel, the slab most D2C products fall into, prepaid, from a metro to a town in another state (Zone D), before GST:
Those three numbers are a fair map of the whole market. India Post costs the most per parcel for a small seller, reaches every PIN code in the country and asks nothing of you but a trip to the counter; the aggregators cost less, pick the courier PIN code by PIN code and handle COD, non-delivery and returns from one dashboard; the paid tiers and direct contracts shave the slab further the more you ship. Add ₹48 and the remittance wait for a COD order, ₹32 more for Zone E, and ₹12–20 for each extra 500 g.
They are also moving targets. India Post rewrote its tariffs twice in twelve months: Speed Post documents in October 2025, the first revision since 2012, and parcels on 1 August 2026, which also moved every item that is not a letter or an ID document into the parcel category and brought back the registered parcel as India Post Parcel. Blue Dart’s fuel surcharge reached 120% on 1 October 2026 and its general price increase runs at 9–12% each January. The aggregators change their cards without ceremony, and India Post announced a revised discount structure for international mail on 12 October 2026. The slab you pay for this Diwali costs more than the one you paid for last Diwali, whoever carries it.
Most Indian stores send most of their parcels domestically, under 1 kg, to home addresses across several zones, and more than half of them cash on delivery. For that profile the decision is about volume, zones and how much of the COD and returns problem you want the software to carry:
Two notes. Weight disputes are the hidden fee of the aggregator model — parcels are re-weighed and re-measured at the hub and the difference is debited from your wallet — so photograph the parcel on the scale with the label visible until your discrepancy rate settles. And read the returns column of any rate card before the forward column: a courier that is ₹5 cheaper outbound and 5 points worse on delivery success is the expensive one.
Indian sellers abroad mostly sell to the United States, the United Kingdom, the Gulf and Australia, and the two biggest of those markets have changed their import rules in the last eighteen months. International shipping has three costs — the label, the duties and taxes at the destination, and the time you spend on export paperwork and problem parcels — and the paperwork is where India differs most.
For selling abroad the order of choice is: ShiprocketX or India Post EMS for light parcels, with duties quoted at checkout; DHL Express or FedEx through an aggregator for urgent or high-value orders; and a direct express contract once you send enough to negotiate — usually well over a hundred international parcels a month. Whatever the carrier, ship DDP to the United States and the European Union.
This is the part of the comparison that is new, and for an Indian seller abroad it matters more than any rate difference between platforms:
On a hosted platform your shipping lives inside someone else’s app store: switching label providers means a new app, a new fee and often a re-done checkout. On a store you own, the provider is a key you store once and change when a better rate comes along. In Claude CMS the shipping zones and rates live in your account under Shop → Shipping — with one-press setups for India and the rest of the world, at placeholder rates you edit — and the courier credentials sit, encrypted, under Connections: Delhivery, DTDC and DHL Express, beside PhonePe for the UPI payments that cut your COD share in the first place. Digital products skip delivery altogether. Nothing adds a per-order fee, and nothing stops you moving from a free aggregator plan to a direct Delhivery contract as the volume grows, because the store never belonged to the courier.
As with payment fees, there is no single winner — only the right fit:
For an Indian store in 2026 the cheapest label is an aggregator’s free plan on a surface courier for the parcels that go to cities, India Post for the ones that go everywhere else, and a direct contract once the volume earns it — and the cheapest shipping strategy is fewer COD orders and fewer returns. Spend the money you save on the thing that actually loses customers abroad: a checkout that shows the real delivery cost, duties included, before they press pay.

For most stores, a free aggregator plan: Shiprocket Lite ships 500 g prepaid for ₹45 in the same city and ₹65 to the rest of India before GST, NimbusPost and Shipway advertise from ₹19–25 on the lightest same-city slab, and all three handle COD and returns. India Post Parcel is ₹72 for 500 g to any other state at the counter and reaches every PIN code. Cash on delivery adds ₹48–56 or 2.5% per order, so the biggest saving is a higher prepaid share.
The fee — about ₹48–56 or 2.5% of the order, whichever is higher, plus GST — is the smallest part. The money arrives about eight working days after delivery unless you pay for early remittance, and a quarter or more of COD parcels are refused and come back, against two or three percent of prepaid ones. A refused ₹1,200 COD order to Zone D costs roughly ₹153 in freight both ways with GST and earns nothing.
For light parcels, ShiprocketX from ₹230 per 50 g, or India Post EMS at ₹1,970 for 500 g to the USA and ₹2,055 to the UK before GST, booked through a Dak Ghar Niryat Kendra. For urgent or high-value orders, DHL Express or FedEx through an aggregator is usually well below the ₹1,800–1,900 list price and arrives in days. You need an IEC and a GST Letter of Undertaking, and since 2025 every parcel to the US pays duty (10% extra on Indian goods since July 2026) while every parcel to the EU pays €3 per item since 1 July 2026, so quote duties at checkout and ship DDP.
Yes. The Importer-Exporter Code costs ₹500 once and is updated online every year between April and June. Exports count as inter-state supplies, so you register for GST and file a Letter of Undertaking (form RFD-11) each financial year to export without charging IGST. Courier exports travel on a CSB-V shipping bill, uncapped since 1 April 2026; postal exports are filed at a Dak Ghar Niryat Kendra and have qualified for drawback and RoDTEP since January 2026.
